Having left school at 16, Mike joined the P&O Shipping company and spent the next four years as a Deck Officer cadet, serving on container ships, general cargo ships and passenger ships, before joining P&O Cruises as an Officer of the Watch (OOW).
After several years on cruise ships, Mike looked for new adventures and joined his first yacht, MY EMANUEL (38m) as a deckhand. He stayed for 2 years, progressing to 1st Mate, before joining MY Golden Odyssey (80m) as 2nd Officer.
In a few years he became Captain of GOLDEN ODYSSEY at age 31 and went onto become Marine Director of the “Golden Fleet” comprising of yachts MY GOLDEN ODYSSEY (124m), GOLDEN ODYSSEY II (80m), MY GOLDEN SHADOW (67m support yacht) and MY GOLDEN OSPREY (30m sport fishing yacht). Mike holds a Master Unlimited licence.
During his time with the “Golden Fleet” he completed worldwide cruising including a full circumnavigation of the world’s oceans from 2008-2013. As part of his job, he also planned the world’s largest coral reef expedition with the Owners’ “Living Oceans Foundation”, encompassing 16 countries, 107 islands, 467 days of research with 216 scientists and travelling over 50,000 km whilst mapping 65,000 square kilometres of coral reefs.
In 2020 Mike moved to join MY NORD as Build Captain at Lurssen Shipyard in Germany. Upon delivery, he became the full time Captain onboard. At 142m in length, MY NORD is one of the largest yachts in the world.
In 2019, Mike was elected as a Freeman of the prestigious Honourable Company of Master Mariners in London and in 2021, was given the ACREW Captain Master Unlimited award.
When not working Mike enjoys playing the piano and recording music in his home studio.
